How We Work

I’m Dan Bashaw, working through LXD Integral Learning Ltd. This page explains how engagements are structured, what the options are, and what to expect when we work together.

Two ways to engage

I work with clients in two ways, depending on what the project and client needs.

Project-based engagements

Project-based engagements are my primary offering. A project engagement has a defined scope, clear deliverables, and an agreed timeline and budget. Most of my work takes this form — it’s the natural fit for building something new, leading a specific initiative, or conducting a diagnostic assessment. Project engagements can be priced as a fixed fee, an hourly rate, or a blend of both, depending on how well-defined the scope is at the outset.

For certain projects, I also offer impact-based pricing — where part or all of the fee is tied to agreed performance metrics such as sales conversions, learner satisfaction scores, or measurable cost reductions. This model works best when the outcomes are clearly measurable and both sides are confident in the KPIs. If this interests you, we can explore it in a discovery call.

Fractional engagement

Fractional engagements are for clients who need ongoing, committed access to my skills — not just for a single project, but as a sustained part of their team. A fractional arrangement brings me on at a predictable monthly commitment, with the continuity and alignment of a staff member and none of the overhead of a full-time hire. In practice, fractional relationships tend to develop after a successful project engagement. Once we’ve worked together and established mutual trust and a shared understanding of your goals, a fractional arrangement becomes a natural next step for organizations that need sustained capacity.

I offer three fractional tiers, each designed for a different level of need:

  • Fractional 24 — 24 hours per month. This tier is designed for smaller organizations that need a skilled, reliable contributor or advisor in the mix on a consistent basis. It’s enough capacity for ongoing system maintenance and development, regular project oversight, or a steady consulting rhythm. Starting from $3,000/month.
  • Fractional 48 — 48 hours per month. This is the tier for organizations with active, ongoing learning and performance support work that needs consistent hands, leadership, or strategic direction. At roughly two days a week, this provides enough depth to manage significant initiatives while maintaining continuity between them. Starting from $5,000/month.
  • Fractional 72 — 72 hours per month. This is a near-dedicated commitment — close to half-time — and I limit it to a single client at a time. At this level, I function as an embedded member of your team with deep context and full alignment with your goals. The 72 tier is designed for organizations that need senior-level capacity in learning and performance support on a sustained basis and want the continuity and institutional knowledge that comes with a long-term working relationship. Starting from $8,500/month. Availability is limited.

All fractional tiers can encompass any combination of my three modes of working — building, leading, or consulting — depending on your organization needs. The mode can shift as your priorities evolve; the commitment stays consistent.

What you can expect

Regardless of how we engage, a few things hold constant:

  • A discovery conversation comes first. I don’t quote on a project without understanding it. A free discovery call — typically 30 minutes — lets us establish whether there’s a fit, clarify the scope, and identify the right engagement model. There’s no obligation and no pressure.
  • Scope is agreed up front. For project work, I provide a clear proposal outlining deliverables, timeline, and pricing before work begins. For fractional engagements, we establish expectations for the first period and adjust as the relationship develops.
  • Communication is direct and consistent. I work remotely from the Comox Valley in British Columbia, and I’m comfortable working across time zones with distributed teams. I communicate clearly, flag issues early, and don’t disappear between check-ins.
  • Quality is the standard. The whole point of “snick” is that your project is done right — complete, tested, accessible, and fit for purpose. I don’t ship work I’m not confident in.

Project rate ranges

My rates reflect the depth and breadth of experience I bring, including 25+ years in learning technologies, a PMP certification, graduate credentials in both Instructional Design and IT Management, and my extensive range of professional capabilities, from instructional design through platform architecture, media production, and AI development. Here are my rates by service:

  • Build it (individual contributor work): $85–$120/hour, or scoped as a fixed-price engagement. Rate depends on the complexity of the build and the range of skills involved.
  • Lead it (project management): $100–$130/hour, or scoped as a fixed-price engagement. Reflects the accountability and coordination demands of managing teams, stakeholders, and timelines.
  • Solve it (consulting and diagnostic work): $120–$150/hour, or scoped as a fixed-price engagement. Strategic and diagnostic work carries the highest rate because it draws most directly on the full breadth of my experience.

All rates are in Canadian dollars. For clients based in the United States or internationally, I’m happy to discuss pricing in your local currency.

Let’s figure out the right fit.

Every engagement starts with a conversation. If you have a project, a challenge, or a need for ongoing support, I’d welcome the chance to hear about it and help you find the right way to work together. dan@lxdintegral.com or 236-489-5226.
